Chronic Illness Recovery: How One Chiropractor Restored His Own Health

Dr. Randy Michaux hurt his shoulder throughout his teenage years, and physical therapy never fully fixed it. In college, still unsure what to do with his life, he agreed to see his mother's chiropractor, mostly to appease her. A round of muscle tests left him stunned at how weak his shoulder had become, and one adjustment later, his arm felt strong again for the first time in years. He enrolled in chiropractic school before he even left the building.

About This Blog

What he did not connect at the time was a second problem building underneath the first. Michaux had suffered from migraines and hypoglycemia since he was thirteen, and chiropractic school did nothing to fix that. By his early thirties, the migraines had grown severe enough to shut his practice down for days at a stretch, and no adjustment could touch them anymore.

In this episode of Fountain of Vitality, host LaMont Leavitt sits down with Dr. Randy Michaux, Health and Wellness Professional and host of the podcast Restore the Real, to talk through what actually rebuilt his health, why he believes most people are disconnected from themselves and each other, and the small steps he now uses with clients recovering from chronic illness and fear.

 The Adjustment That Changed Everything

Michaux grew up wanting to help people, without a clear sense of how. His mother kept suggesting chiropractic, and he kept brushing it off, until a Christmas visit to her chiropractor turned into a battery of muscle tests that left him humbled. He could barely hold his own arm against light pressure, and the practitioner traced the weakness back to his neck rather than his shoulder.

One adjustment later, Michaux described feeling like he had a bionic arm. The relief did not last, and the practitioner told him as much, but the moment was enough. He decided on the spot to become a chiropractor, driven less by a five-year plan than by how directly he had just watched someone's body respond to care.

 When Migraines Shut His Practice

Years into practice, Michaux's migraines had become unmanageable. Some episodes brought tunnel vision and vomiting, followed by hours alone in a dark, silent room. Chiropractic adjustments, the tool he trusted most, stopped helping and sometimes made things worse. A naturopath finally connected the pattern: parasites, mold, and a gut in crisis, with colon cancer as the road he was headed down at thirty two. His wife cried in the appointment.

The lifestyle overhaul that followed was total. Michaux and his wife emptied their pantry and refrigerator and rebuilt their diet from scratch, at one point down to a liquid diet his body could barely process. He lost roughly thirty pounds off an already lean frame and spent two years rebuilding his strength, all while learning he had been pre-diabetic without a single classic symptom to show for it.

 Rebuilding Through Frequency and Biofeedback

Recovery came through more than diet. Michaux's naturopath introduced him to biofeedback, a device that read his body's responses and helped identify what it needed, and to frequency work delivered through tinctures he did not understand at the time. He kept following her guidance simply because it was working, even without a model for why.

The migraines that once struck three or four times a week eventually stopped altogether, and Michaux has now gone roughly seventeen years without one. That result reframed how he saw health entirely, opening him to the idea that the body runs on more than diet and exercise, and that unresolved energetic and emotional patterns can block healing as much as any infection.

 Why Restore the Real Exists

Michaux built his podcast, Restore the Real, around a belief that most people are disconnected, from themselves, from nature, and from each other. He points to how much of daily life now runs through screens and automation, leaving little room for the kind of presence he considers genuinely healing.

To him, real connection happens without an agenda. It might be sitting quietly under a tree, or staying fully present with another person for a few unhurried minutes. He carried that belief into his practice, treating the felt sense of being heard as part of the healing process itself, not a soft add-on to it.

 The Mask We All Wear

Michaux traces some of his own fear of being seen back to his father, a Marine who served in forest reconnaissance in Vietnam. Only after his father died did Michaux read letters that showed a private, constant fear of death that never surfaced at home. Growing up, the message he absorbed instead was simpler: be stronger, be better, be faster, or risk not being enough.

That belief followed him into business, where marketing himself felt unbearable, and exercise became a convenient escape from the fear underneath. He now sees that pattern clearly in many of his clients too, people wearing a functioning mask in public while quietly struggling underneath, afraid that being fully seen will only invite more pain.

 Small Steps Build Real Capacity

Michaux distinguishes between goals and intentions, and pairs both with what he calls capacity, the honest measure of what a person can actually do right now. He described a client who could not run but committed to simply putting on running shoes every day for a week, then eventually walked to the end of her driveway and back. That single step, repeated, expanded what felt possible.

He applies the same logic to fear of connection. One client, afraid to leave her house, started by imagining she might just say hello to a stranger and keep walking. That small permission eventually rebuilt her willingness to be in public at all. Michaux is direct about the trap of comparison, insisting that progress only means anything measured against where a person actually started.

 Healing the Whole Person Today

Michaux now runs his practice around chronic illness recovery, working with clients dealing with mold illness, Lyme disease, and heavy metal toxicity. He pairs physical protocols with body code, an energy modality developed by Brad Nelson, along with breath work and biofeedback.

He treats symptoms and unresolved emotional patterns as connected rather than separate problems, listening for the words and phrases a client repeats and following those back to where the pattern started.

 Key Takeaways

  • Chronic symptoms often point somewhere the diagnosis never mentions.

  • A body can carry diabetes risk without ever looking sick.

  • Real healing usually asks for more than willpower and exercise.

  • Fear of being seen quietly shapes more decisions than people realize.

  • Capacity grows through small, repeatable steps, not big leaps.

  • Comparing your progress to someone else's erases your own.

  • Connection heals in ways a prescription alone cannot reach.

  • Courage looks like reaching out again after being ignored the first time.

  • A mask worn in public can hide real suffering underneath.

  • Trust rebuilds the same way capacity does, one small step at a time.
